52 Weeks of Colin Farrell
Feature image by Quejaytee – Own work, CC BY 4.0, Link
I plan to watch 52 feature films in this year 2026 that contain Colin Farrell.
I have no good reason or explanation for doing this. I don’t have a bad one either.
Colin Farrell has 67 acting credits on IMDB. Narrowing things down slightly:
- His first 2 movies (Frankie Starlight and The Disappearance of Finbarr), he is uncredited and seems to be more of an extra, so I will skip for now.
- 9 credits are classed as TV Series or TV Mini Series.
- There are also 2 shorts which I don’t believe can count towards my total.
This leaves me with just 54 titles to choose from and there doesn’t seem to be anything new set to be released in 2026. By my count, I have seen 18 of his movies before, many in the distant past and some as recently as last year. If I do make it to the 52 mark early, I will look to round out his entire filmography – but, to be clear, the goal is just 52 movies in the calendar year.
I will update this post as I watch new ones and push the older posts to the bottom. I will be watching each movie in chronological order because it is the only way that makes sense to me.
Up Next: Pride & Glory (2008). I haven’t seen this but I am looking forward to rewatching Ondine in 3 movies time.

In Bruges (2008)
Date Watched: Feb 26 First time: No
My 10 Word Review
This is what made me a simp for the McDonaghs.
The Critics Were…
effusive in their praise, if they liked it. At 84%, there is a significant minority who didn’t and most of those seem to have issues with the violence and/or profanity. I saw very few that thought it was just an okay movie.
How was Colin?
Career defining.
This Movie Has Aged…
The things that offended many in 2008 are probably even worse these days but the performances, the emotional spine of the movie, the setting – all still wonderful.
Trivia or Tripe
The word ‘fuck’ and its derivatives are said 126 times in this 107-minute film, an average of 1.18 ‘fucks’ per minute.

Cassandra’s Dream (2007)
Date Watched: Feb 25 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Brooding London noir, anchored by Farrell, never finds a pulse.
The Critics Were…
“Everything is utterly disengaged.” This one encapsulates it for me. So many scenes started by explaining what had happened off screen since the last scene and set up the next scene. Casting a Scotsman and an Irish man and giving them these awful, caricature-y Cockney accents was a choice I wouldn’t have made
How was Colin?
Probably the best part of the movie since he was the only thing with a bit of real emotion.
This Movie Has Aged…
It’s as bad now as it probably was then.
Trivia or Tripe
Woody Allen had trouble telling Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor apart, and often got them mixed up.

Miami Vice (2006)
Date Watched: Feb 19 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Self-serious crime drama lacking charm, spark, and any real payoff.
The Critics Were…
seemingly loving or hating this one which is why it lands at 47% on RT. I gave it 3 stars, which I think it probably generous, because I can definitely understand the haters more than the 10/10s. It just felt like the director decided on a vibe and couldn’t move from it. I know there were several issues with Jamie Foxx during filming that might have caused some of the issues but it just took itself far too seriously overall.
How was Colin?
He fit the vibe that the director seemed to be going for and did it well but this could have been a role for him to have some fun with and it wasn’t.
This Movie Has Aged…
I’ve read somewhere that it’s aged well and seems to have found an audience 20 years later, but I don’t understand that at all. I was quite disappointed.
Trivia or Tripe
Between when he was cast and the start of production, Jamie Foxx won an Oscar, greatly increasing his ego and his demands. He was being paid less than Colin Farrell, and demanded a raise. Farrell’s salary was cut.

Ask the Dust (2006)
Date Watched: Feb 14 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Moody period romance with decent chemistry but not great writing.
The Critics Were…
fairly scathing in their criticisms (36%), most saying that it was boring and had nothing to offer. Some complained about the performances of Hayek and Farrell and some had absolutely nothing good to say about it. I found it significantly better but I would still struggle to say it is good. There’s enough there for it to be watchable but that’s it.
How was Colin?
Actually very good. Subtle, insecure, and believable. I rarely say that he is the problem in the movie, but I think he actually carried this one from being an unwatchable dud.
This Movie Has Aged…
It seems to be remembered more for the Salma Hayek nudity than anything else that actually happens in the movie.
Trivia or Tripe
Salma Hayek developed hypothermia while filming the skinny-dipping ocean scenes.

The New World (2005)
Date Watched: Feb 9 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Beautiful, meditative epic that drifts slowly into self-indulgence and boredom
The Critics Were…
Wildly inconsistent on this one which the 63% on RT does not tell. Lots of critics giving it full marks and some totally poo-pooing every aspect of it. The two most recent audience reviews on RT are a 5 star and a 1/2 star. Both are outrageous in my view. I gave it 3.5 stars.
How was Colin?
He looked the part but, at the end of the day, he was Colin Farrell playing John Smith.
This Movie Has Aged…
Visually very well. I thought it looked beautiful pretty much throughout. As mentioned though, it is slow and audiences would be even less forgiving of that these days.
Trivia or Tripe
Farrell insisted on doing scenes barefoot “to feel the soil of the New World.”

Alexander (2004)
Date Watched: Feb 8 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
An epic repeatedly undermined by tone, structure, accents, and excess.
The Critics Were…
Critics were broadly unimpressed, and so was I. . The frustrating part is that there is a good movie in there somewhere. The bad news is that 4 different cuts of the movie haven’t found it yet. The constant time-jumping and pseudo-Shakespearean dialogue? The accents? It did have its moments but this one did take me several days to watch.
How was Colin?
A lot of talk about him being miscast. He did look ridiculous in the blond wig but I don’t know any actor who might have pulled off that costume and dialogue and the Irish accent was obviously a choice but presumably not his. Much like the movie, he had his moments but there was probably more bad or baffling than there was good.
This Movie Has Aged…
It actually still looks beautiful for much of the movie but it is still bad.
Trivia or Tripe
Heath Ledger was originally considered for the role of Alexander.

A Home at the End of the World (2004)
Date Watched: Feb 1 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Tender, messy, intimate portrait of chosen family, longing, love, sadness.
The Critics Were…
significantly less moved than I. It seems to be at least partly that it didn’t do the book (which I haven’t read yet) justice and partly that they don’t like the whole throuple concept. Either way, I found myself liking this a lot more than I expected. The audience score at 67% is much closer to where I’m at, and I wouldn’t have an issue if they were in the mid 70s. 50% feels like there’s something else going on with the critics here.
How was Colin?
It’s absolutely not a role I would have cast him for and he didn’t knock it out of the park by any means, but he was very good and amazing at times. I’d love to see an alternate timeline where we tried this right before In Bruges and see if he’d have totally nailed it then.
This Movie Has Aged…
I’m not saying it’s a great movie but if they remade it today with Jacob Elordi in the CF role, Saoirse Ronan as Robin Wright, and Julianne Moore in for Sissy Spacek, you’re looking at an awards darling. I think todays audience would eat it up
Trivia or Tripe
The movie had a worldwide box office grossed over $150,000,000.

interMission (2003)
Date Watched: Jan 30 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Razor-sharp writing, stellar Irish ensemble, intersecting storylines collide hilariously.
The Critics Were…
in surprising lockstep with the audience, hovering around the 75% mark. I think the low budget probably caused most of the problems with the movie but a big budget could easily have ruined it too. I can see why this is considered one of the great Irish movies.
How was Colin?
He played a bit of a nutjob and he played him very well. Commanded each scene he was in, in an understated way.
This Movie Has Aged…
surprisingly well. The style in which it was shot probably felt old in 2003 so doesn’t feel any older now. The dialogue is still cracking, the ensemble format will never get old for me.
Trivia or Tripe
In the opening scene, Colin accidentally punched Kerry Condon for real, causing a nose bleed. This was the take that was kept in the movie.

S.W.A.T (2003)
Date Watched: Jan 28 First time: No
My 10 Word Review
Never really made me care for anyone but entertaining nonetheless.
The Critics Were…
very lukewarm on this one too. Maybe slightly harsher than I would have been but it is quite straightforward. The main villain was fine but lacked depth, the other bad guys were quite obvious, and I found myself engaged but not on the edge of my seat. Both critics and audience were around 50% and I can’t disagree.
How was Colin?
Not a leading man role which feels like a step back after Phone Booth and The Recruit, along with the absolute dud that was his villain in Daredevil. He was perfectly good and held his own beside Samuel L.
This Movie Has Aged…
exactly as you’d expect. It’s very early-2000s in style, but the pacing and action still make it an easy, entertaining watch.
Trivia or Tripe
For what feels like the 8th movie in a row, Farrell was not first choice for the role with Mark Wahlberg preferred and Paul Walker cast originally.

Veronica Guerin (2003)
Date Watched: Jan 28 First time: No
My 10 Word Review
Not the greatest movie ever but a personal favorite always
The Critics Were…
lukewarm and harsh on this one. At 53%, one review tells us tepidly that the movie is “watchable,” but most critics seem to think the story is compelling and the movie isn’t. This doesn’t make any sense to me. The audience at 68% feels closer to the mark.
How was Colin?
He’s good for the 75 seconds he’s on screen for what is very much a cameo. I’m not sure whether it was a scheduling conflict or budgetary reasons that they didn’t find a bigger role for him but Joel Schumacher (Tigerland & Phone Booth) was obviously a big fan.
This Movie Has Aged…
with grace. Its focus on journalism, corruption, and personal risk are timeless. It may have focused too deeply on the woman herself and her specific circumstance which may alienate new viewers, but that’s part of why I love it.
Trivia or Tripe
This is the second Colin Farrell movie in this watch where Saoirse Ronan’s aul lad has a minor role. He was one of at least 16 Fair City alum in the movie.

Daredevil (2003)
Date Watched: Jan 28 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Talent wasted in movie that doesn’t work on any level
The Critics Were…
largely unimpressed. For me, it failed to get pretty much anything right. I’m giving it 2 stars based on the fact that there is a decent movie buried in there somewhere but it needed a lot more time in the writers rooms.
How was Colin?
Horrific. Absolute poo poo. I don’t know if it his fault, the writers, the direction, or a healthy mix of all of them but it was hard to watch. Conor McGregor in Road House levels of cringe.
This Movie Has Aged…
I don’t think it was very well received at the time. Now that people know what a Marvel superhero movie can look like, I don’t think they will look any more kindly on it.
Trivia or Tripe
Colin Farrell was considered for the part of Daredevil, until Ben Affleck signed on the dotted line. Affleck had also been considered for Bullseye.

The Recruit (2003)
Date Watched: Jan 20 First time: No
My 10 Word Review
Slick spy thriller, occasionally messy, relentlessly entertaining from the jump.
The Critics Were…
pretty unkind to this one with 43% on RT. I thought it was well paced, had decent acting and kept me engaged throughout. Not totally gripping by any means and there were some strange choices in the story itself. The audience are at 58% and I’d probably be slightly kinder than that again.
How was Colin?
Again, I can’t fault his performance too much. I don’t think he was what let the side down on this one.
This Movie Has Aged…
better than expected. The post-9/11 paranoia, analog spycraft, and slow-burn suspicion feel almost refreshing now, even if the plot twists still stretch logic.
Trivia or Tripe
The band playing in the bar scene, is the Canadian band Arcade Fire.

Phone Booth (2002)
Date Watched: Jan 20 First time: No
My 10 Word Review
Taut, gimmicky thriller but entertaining as hell for eighty minutes
The Critics Were…
a little kinder than the audience again, which feels surprising with a premise that stretched credibility a little.
How was Colin?
He was excellent. There’s no way this movie works if he wasn’t, since he is on screen almost the entire time and in a literal phone booth for the majority.
This Movie Has Aged…
perfectly fine. Maybe the new generations don’t know what a phone booth is, but it captures a certain time quite well.
Trivia or Tripe
The word “fuck” is said 143 times.

Minority Report (2002)
Date Watched: Jan 20 First time: No
My 10 Word Review
Sci-fi noir juggling prophecy, policing, free will. Sticks the landing.
The Critics Were…
very happy with this and I am too. The audience were 9% less impressed which surprised me. It’s entertaining throughout with a solid villain in Farrell and a fairly well thought out sci-fi premise. Yes, belief did need to be suspended but that’s true for pretty much everything.
How was Colin?
He was good, or seemed to be, especially when you know he was at the height of his addictions during this one and couldn’t get his lines out in some cases.
This Movie Has Aged…
very well. Still holds up for me in all aspects, even if some of the technology seems a little flawed or far away.
Trivia or Tripe
Steven Spielberg hired the top twelve contortionists from around the world to do the futuristic yoga class scene.

Hart’s War (2002)
Date Watched: Jan 20 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Ambitious POW drama, courtroom thriller, and war movie plastered together.
The Critics Were…
just about fresh on this and I agree with them. The audience were a litlle less lukewarm. I though the acting was great and the writing was better than passable. The movie just had no idea what it was trying to be but knew that it wanted to hit you over the head with all of its themes.
How was Colin?
I thought he was great, no complaints.
This Movie Has Aged…
It still looks good. There’s nothing problematic in it, besides Terrence Howard. If you’re stuck for a war movie in 2026, you could do worse.
Trivia or Tripe
Edward Norton and Tobey Maguire were both in talks for the lead role, but both eventually dropped out.

American Outlaws (2001)
Date Watched: Jan 17 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Charisma to burn, just nothing else around to ignite it
The Critics Were…
much harsher than I expected. It’s a bad movie but not 13% bad. The audiences 67% is probably being kind too. It just felt like it didn’t know if it was trying to be and who it was trying to entertain. I held on to mild amusement for most of it and will likely not watch it again.
How was Colin?
Probably as good as he was able to be, all things considered, although his accent could be best described as shaky. I definitely heard Dublin coming though at times.
This Movie Has Aged…
poorly. Nothing problematic to bring it down but it’s not a very good movie and won’t be reaching cult classic status at any point.
Trivia or Tripe
Colin Farrell did as many of his own stunts as Les Mayfield would let him do.

Tigerland (2000)
Date Watched: Jan 12 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
A solid war movie that never actually goes to war
The Critics Were…
equal parts whelmed and underwhelmed. They actually liked the movie better than the audience but not wildly different. Most people land somewhere between 3 and 4 stars and I think that’s fair.
How was Colin?
This was his first time playing the leading man and I thought he did so very well. His character was quite the dick at times but I can absolutely see why this would and did put him on the Hollywood radar.
This Movie Has Aged…
quite well but doesn’t seem to be remembered. I have no reason to say this but I think if it were released today it would have done better and likely be remembered more.
Trivia or Tripe
The production allegedly had to give Farrell a quiet reminder about fraternizing with locals near Fort Polk after a few “late nights” began bleeding into early call times.

Ordinary Decent Criminal (2000)
Date Watched: Jan 10 First time: No
My 10 Word Review
Is it a good movie? No, but it is enjoyable.
The Critics Were…
on a different planet (14%) to the audience on this one and I’m siding with the audience at 60%. Yeah, it had it’s issues, the Irish accents and the dubbing being the most fatal. Most of the Brit and Yanks failed badly but it was the self parody of the actual Irish actors that was almost as tough to take. Move past that and the technically inept writing for the climax and it’s a pretty fun movie overall.
How was Colin?
This was by far the meatiest movie role of his career to date with what can readily be described as several lines, and a scene with a very much pre-fame Christoph Waltz. This did feel like the first time he looked and sounded like an actor and not an extra who had been given a couple of lines.
This Movie Has Aged…
Spacey is in it so that seems to sour everything. The self parody and haplessness of the Gardai is tough to watch but I think it’s still watchable today.
Trivia or Tripe
Spacey recommended Colin Farrell to Joel Schumacher, who gave Farrell his first Hollywood break in Tigerland (2000).

The War Zone (1999)
Date Watched: Jan 7 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Well, fair to say I was not prepared for that.
The Critics Were…
mostly right by my estimation. Mostly good to excellent reviews with a few very bad ratings from critics who presumably (and understandably, in my book) could not get past the dark material. It is absolutely and irreversibly fucked for every one of its 94 minutes – but still good, like.
How was Colin?
Glorified extra in this one, but if you told me that Dominic Monaghan modeled his character in Lord of the Rings off Colin J Farrell’s one scene in this movie, I wouldn’t be that surprised.
This Movie Has Aged…
It looks beautiful and is very well made. Just please, for the love of everyone and everything you hold dear, don’t go into it blind. If you don’t heed that advice, then make sure you watch it alone.
Trivia or Tripe
At a screening during the 1999 Toronto International Film Festival, one viewer was so upset that he rose to his feet and intended to pull the fire alarm. Tim Roth (director), intercepted him, and it took 20 minutes to calm the man down.

Drinking Crude (1997)
Date Watched: Jan 3 First time: Yes
My 10 Word Review
Silly little indie flick with surprisingly stacked (in retrospect) cast
The Critics Were…
non-existent for the most part but the 4.5/10 on IMDB is harsh. I wouldn’t argue with anyone who gave it 3 or 3.5 stars.
How was Colin?
I wasn’t sure he was ever going to show up.
This Movie Has Aged…
like a fine wine, I suppose. A very solid early performance from Andrew Scott, decent support from Eva Birthistle, and an appearance from Colin Farrell, while all were very early in their respective acting careers makes this a pretty highly sought-after older movie.
Trivia or Tripe
Colin Farrell doesn’t know if this is a good movie or not but was delighted to get free ham and cheese sandwiches.
